My garden is one of my main hobbies and it's my pride and joy. The only people who can see it are the birds and wildlife that use it, myself and any visitors. It's a very small inner city backyard really and is about 21 feet by 14 feet.
The house is rented and when I moved in 25 years ago there was no garden, just four feet high weeds! It took me a few weeks to sort it into some sort of order and I have given it several 'makeovers' since. Apart from the plants, nothing else will be changed now.
The soil is neutral and very light but also very fertile. It dries out quickly so is free draining and at one time I did try to have a small lawn. However, as the garden receives very little sun in the winter due to the fact that it is west facing and surrounding houses block the sun, The grass didn't grow very well and I ended up with a load of dandelions! So I put a patio in a few years ago when I did the hard landscaping before the arthritis got too bad.
My grand-daughter Eden helps me when she comes down and it has always been done on a shoestring. Now I am retired, I can sit out there and just enjoy looking at the flowers and watch the bees and other insects enjoying the flowers too.
